Choosing Curtain Fabric in Dubai: What Survives the Sun

In London or Mumbai, choosing curtain fabric is mostly a question of how a room should look. In Dubai it also decides how long the room keeps looking that way.

A west-facing window here takes direct sun for hours a day, most of the year. UV does not care how much the fabric cost. Deep colours fade unevenly, natural fibres weaken, and a curtain that looked beautiful in year one can look tired by year three — on one side of the house and not the other.

Here is what actually holds up, and the detail that matters more than any of it.

In a cooler climate fabric choice is mostly about how a room looks. Here it also decides how long the room keeps looking that way.

The detail that matters more than the fabric: lining

Before the fabrics, the thing most people skip.

The lining is what takes the sun. It sits between the glass and your face fabric and absorbs most of the UV before it reaches the cloth you chose. The same linen, lined, lasts far longer on a sun-facing window than unlined.

Lining also makes the curtain hang properly. It adds weight so the folds fall in a column instead of flapping, it improves blackout and insulation, and it stops the light showing the seams through the fabric.

It is the first thing cut from a cheap quotation and the thing most often regretted. If the budget is tight, choose a simpler fabric and keep the lining rather than the other way round.

Linen

The fabric most people want, and with reason. It drapes beautifully, has a texture that reads as expensive without trying, and suits the light here.

The catch: linen moves with humidity. In a Dubai summer a long linen curtain can hang slightly longer than it did in winter, which matters on a floor-length drop. A good maker allows for it in the hem. It also creases, which some people read as character and others as untidy.

Unlined linen on a sun-facing window will weaken over time. Lined, it is a good choice almost anywhere.

Linen blends — linen with cotton or polyester — keep most of the look, move less, and hold colour better. For a west-facing room they are usually the smarter buy.

Cotton

Easy to work with, takes colour well, comes in every weave and price. A sensible choice for bedrooms and family rooms.

It fades faster than synthetics in direct sun and, like linen, it is happier lined. A heavy cotton with a good lining is a quietly reliable curtain that nobody will ever criticise.

Velvet

The right answer for a majlis, a formal reception or a dining room. It has weight, it holds a deep pleat, it absorbs sound, and it looks substantial in a tall room.

Modern velvets are usually polyester or a blend rather than cotton, and that is an advantage here: they resist fading far better and do not crush as easily.

Two things to know. Velvet shows the direction of the pile, so panels must be cut the same way or one will look darker than the other — a real mistake we have been asked to fix. And it is warm in every sense, which is why it belongs in formal rooms rather than a small bright bedroom.

Polyester and performance fabrics

Unfashionable to recommend and often the correct answer.

Modern polyester and polyester blends now imitate linen and silk convincingly, and they beat natural fibres on the two things that matter most in Dubai: UV stability and dimensional stability. They hold their colour, they do not stretch with humidity, and they clean easily.

For a west elevation, a child’s room, a rental property or anywhere that needs to still look right in five years with no fuss, this is usually the sensible choice. Nobody standing in the room will identify the fibre; they will notice the fullness and the lining.

Silk, and why we usually say no

Real silk is the most beautiful curtain fabric there is, and it does not survive a sun-facing window in this climate. It weakens and shatters under sustained UV, and it marks with water.

If you want silk, it belongs on a north-facing window, fully lined and interlined, in a room that is not in direct sun.

Otherwise, the silk-look polyesters now available are genuinely convincing, hold their colour, and cost a fraction. We specify them often and nobody has ever asked.

Sheers

Sheers are a separate decision from the main curtain, and the rules differ.

Polyester sheers hold their length and their whiteness. Linen sheers drape better and look more expensive, but they move with humidity and yellow slightly over years in strong light.

On a window that takes six hours of sun a day, the polyester or linen-blend sheer is the practical answer. In a shaded room, enjoy the linen.

Colour: the Dubai-specific part

Two things nobody mentions until it is too late.

Deep, saturated colours fade unevenly on sun-facing glass. A navy or a deep teal can go patchy in a way a mid-tone of the same colour will not. If you want a strong colour on a west window, choose a mid-tone of it and line the curtain properly.

Judge colour in your own room. Dubai daylight is harder and whiter than showroom lighting. A beige that looked warm under halogen can read grey and cold at home. We leave samples for exactly this reason — look at them at the hour you use the room, and again at night with the lights on.

Quick guide

Majlis or formal reception — velvet, jacquard or heavy linen, lined and often interlined.

Bedroom — anything you like, with blackout lining. The lining is doing the work.

Living room, west facing — linen blend or performance fabric, mid-tone, lined.

Living room, shaded — linen, enjoy it.

Child’s room — performance fabric, washable, cordless or motorised track.

Kitchen or bathroom — not a curtain. A blind in a wipeable fabric.

Rental or short-term — polyester blend, mid-tone, standard lining.

Where to go next. See custom made curtains for how fabric, fullness, lining and track are quoted separately, majlis curtains for the heavier end, and sheer vs blackout curtains for deciding the layers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best curtain fabric for Dubai?
There is no single best, but lined linen blends and modern performance fabrics handle the combination of UV, heat and humidity better than unlined natural fibres. The lining matters more than the fabric you pick.

Do curtains fade in Dubai?
Yes, on sun-facing windows, and unevenly. Lining blocks most of the UV before it reaches the face fabric, and mid-tones fade far less visibly than deep saturated colours.

Is linen a good choice here?
Lined, yes. Unlined on a west-facing window, it will weaken over time. Linen also moves with humidity, so a long drop can hang slightly longer in summer; a good maker allows for that in the hem.

Can I use real silk curtains?
Only on a shaded window, fully lined and interlined. Sustained UV weakens silk. The silk-look polyesters are convincing, hold their colour and cost far less.

Is polyester a cheap option?
It is often the better option here rather than the cheaper one. Modern blends imitate linen and silk well and beat natural fibres on fade resistance and stability.

How do I choose a colour?
Look at a large sample in the actual room, at the time of day you use it most, and again at night with the lights on. Showroom lighting is nothing like Dubai daylight.
