A majlis is not a living room with different furniture. It is a room built for receiving people, and the height, the seating around the perimeter and the way the light crosses the middle all change what the curtains have to do. We make majlis seating and majlis curtains in the same Dubai workshop, so the curtain fabric and the upholstery fabric can be laid side by side on one table before anything is cut. Majlis windows commonly run to four metres or more. At that height a wave heading can sag, so triple pinch pleat and goblet pleat are the headings that hold, and interlining becomes worth it because it gives the fabric enough body to fall in a deep, even column. The track has to be engineered rather than simply fixed, because a four-metre lined curtain is heavy. Most majlis use is after Maghrib, but the room sits empty through the hottest hours with the sun on the glass, and that is what fades fabric and heats furniture, so blackout or thermal lining earns its place even in a room you only use at night. A majlis also faces the street or the compound entrance more often than not, and a sheer that reads as opaque in daylight turns transparent once the lights are on, so two layers on a double track is almost always the right answer. Velvet, textured jacquard, damask and heavy linen all carry well at this scale; mid-tones hold their colour on sun-facing glass far better than the deepest shade of the same colour.
