We make furniture to order for a living. That gives us an obvious bias, so this article tries to be useful rather than persuasive: here is when having furniture made is genuinely the right decision in Dubai, and when buying ready-made is the smarter move.
When bespoke is clearly the right choice
The space is an awkward size. This is the most common reason and the most convincing one. Dubai apartments and villas are full of alcoves, structural columns, long narrow living rooms and bay windows. A standard three-seater is 210 to 230 cm. If your wall is 280 cm, nothing standard fits properly, and you will end up with either a gap or a sofa that blocks a door.
You need a continuous run of seating. Majlis seating along two or three walls cannot be assembled from loose sofas without visible joins and wasted corners. It has to be set out and built for the room.
The mattress or the ceiling is non-standard. Bed frames are the clearest case. UAE king and queen sizes differ from European and American ones, and a frame that is 4 cm wrong leaves a gap at the side that no sheet will cover. Tall rooms are the same story for headboards.
It has to match something that already exists. Matching an existing majlis, adding a second sofa to a set bought years ago, or carrying one fabric across a sofa, a bench and a headboard is straightforward in a workshop and close to impossible in a shop.
The furniture will be used hard. Hotel, restaurant and office seating takes punishment that domestic furniture is not built for. Contract-grade foam and high rub-count fabric are specification choices, not catalogue options. That is the whole basis of our hospitality and FF&E work.
When ready-made is the better buy
We say this to customers regularly, so it is worth putting in writing.
If the room is a standard shape, you want the piece this month, and the size works, buy it ready-made. You will pay less and wait days instead of weeks. A bespoke process makes no sense for a guest bedroom chair that nobody will sit in.
The same applies to anything you expect to replace in two or three years, and to furnishing a rental you may leave. Bespoke furniture is built to outlast a tenancy, and that is only worth paying for if you intend to keep it.
This is exactly why Golden Decor and our shop, Kaipan, exist side by side. Kaipan sells ready-made sofas, armchairs, beds and bedding online with prices and delivery times published, for people who want to choose and order today. Golden Decor is for the jobs that have to be measured and made.
What actually drives the cost
Four things, roughly in order of impact.
Fabric. The spread between a basic weave and an imported velvet or leather is wider than most people expect, and it is usually the single largest variable in a quotation. The frame underneath can be identical.
Size and complexity. A straight three-seater is simple. Curves, corner returns, channelled or buttoned detailing and integrated storage all add hours of hand work.
The frame and filling. Kiln-dried hardwood, webbed or sprung seats and graded foam cost more than a softwood box with a single foam block, and that difference is the one you feel in year five rather than year one.
Finishing. Hand-stitched edges, piping, contrast welts and removable covers are each a line on the quotation.
What rarely drives cost in the way people assume: a slightly unusual size. Building a 280 cm sofa instead of a 230 cm one costs a little more in material and almost nothing in labour, because the piece is being cut and built either way.
How to judge a bespoke maker
Four questions worth asking anyone, including us.
Can I see the workshop? A maker who builds what they sell will say yes without hesitation.
What is inside the frame? You should get a straight answer about the timber, the seat suspension and the foam density.
Can I see a sample or a prototype before the full order? For a large or unusual job this should be normal, not a favour.
Who installs it? The difference between a good delivery and a bad one is whether the people carrying it in were part of making it.
Our own answers: the factory and showroom are together at Al Khawaneej 2 and visits are welcome; frames are kiln-dried hardwood; samples are made for larger orders; and our own team delivers and installs. The detail of how we work sits on our custom sofas page, and the process from first conversation to installation is on our services page.
If you are weighing the two options for a specific room, send us the measurements and photos. If ready-made is the better answer for what you need, we will tell you so and point you to it.
Custom is not automatically better. It is better when the room, the size or the use makes the standard option wrong.
