Choosing a Carpet or Rug in Dubai: Pile, Size and Fitting

Custom-cut rug with bound edge in a Dubai villa by Golden Decor

Almost every home in Dubai has hard flooring: tile, porcelain or marble. It is the right choice for the climate and it has one side effect nobody mentions at handover. A room with hard floors, glass and plaster walls echoes, and that echo is why some rooms feel uncomfortable to sit in even when they look good.

Carpet and rugs are the fix. Here is how to choose them properly.

Size the rug to the furniture, not to the room

This is the mistake we see most often, and it is worth more than everything else in this article.

A rug should sit under the seating, not float in the gap between the sofa and the coffee table. The test: the front legs of every sofa and armchair in the group should stand on the rug. If the rug only reaches the coffee table, the seating looks disconnected from it and the room reads as smaller than it is.

Practical numbers for Dubai rooms:

For a three-seater with two chairs, you usually need 240 x 340 cm or larger. The 160 x 230 cm rug that looks generous rolled up in a shop is a hallway rug.

In a dining room, the rug needs to extend 60 to 70 cm beyond the table on every side, so the back chair legs stay on it when someone pushes back from the table.

Under a bed, either run the rug across the full width with 60 cm showing on each side and at the foot, or use two narrow runners beside the bed. Anything in between looks accidental.

Because these sizes rarely match what is in stock, we cut rugs from the roll to the size the room needs and finish the edge with binding, whipping or a leather trim. A cut-to-size rug in a plain quality often costs less than a branded rug in the wrong size.

Pile: match it to the traffic, not the look

Wool feels best underfoot, holds colour and recovers from furniture dents. It is the right choice for bedrooms, majlis rooms and formal sitting rooms, and the wrong choice for a hallway where every grain of sand from the garden ends up.

Wool-blend gives most of the feel with better resilience, and is a sensible default when a room has to do both jobs.

Nylon is the hardest-wearing fibre for heavy traffic and cleans well. Stairs, corridors, offices and family rooms.

Polypropylene is the most stain-resistant and the most affordable, and it fades least in strong light. Good for children's rooms, villa majlis areas used by large groups, and anywhere with sun on the floor.

On construction: a short, dense, tightly twisted pile holds its appearance far longer than a long, soft one. A deep shag looks luxurious for about six months in a room that is actually used.

Wall-to-wall carpet and what fitting involves

Wall-to-wall carpet is less common in Dubai than it should be. In a bedroom it transforms both the warmth and the acoustics, and it is the single most effective thing you can do about noise between floors in a villa.

Fitted properly, the job involves more than laying carpet. The subfloor is checked and levelled, underlay goes down, the carpet is stretched rather than just laid flat, and the edges are tucked at the skirting with joins placed away from doorways and sightlines. Underlay is not optional: it carries the comfort, the insulation and most of the carpet's life.

Stairs are a specialist job. A runner with bound edges and proper fixing at each nosing looks better and lasts longer than carpet taken loosely over the treads.

We lift and dispose of the old carpet and underlay as part of the same visit where that is needed, and most rooms are fitted in a single visit once the carpet has arrived.

Living with carpet in Dubai

Three things matter here more than anywhere else.

Sand. It is abrasive and it works down into the pile, where it cuts the fibres from below. A barrier mat at every external door and regular vacuuming does more for carpet life than any treatment.

Sun. Direct afternoon light will fade a natural fibre. Either use a solution-dyed synthetic on that side of the room, or control the light; curtains and blinds do that job and we cover the options on our curtains and blinds page.

Humidity. Let a spill dry properly rather than rubbing it in, and keep air moving in closed rooms. Carpet itself handles the climate well; trapped damp underneath does not.

Getting the size right first time

Send us a photo of the room with the seating in place and the room dimensions, or ask for a site measurement, which is included with the quotation anywhere in Dubai. We will come back with the rug or carpet size that fits the furniture rather than the size that happens to be in stock. The pile options and edge finishes are set out on our carpets and rugs page, and if the floor underneath also needs attention, our flooring page covers that.

A rug that is too small makes a room look smaller. It is the most common and the most expensive mistake.
