A Roman blind is a flat panel of curtain fabric that draws up into soft horizontal folds. That one sentence explains both why people choose it and where it belongs: you get the look and weight of a curtain, in a fraction of the space a curtain needs when open.
We stitch Roman blinds to size in our Al Khawaneej workshop, and these are the questions that come up on almost every site visit.
Roman, roller or curtain?
A roller blind wraps flat around a tube. It is the cheapest option, takes the least space, and looks functional rather than soft. Right for a utility room, a bathroom, an office.
A Roman blind uses dress curtain fabric and folds into pleats. It costs more than a roller and less than a pair of curtains, and it reads as a soft furnishing rather than a fitting. Right for bedrooms, kitchens, smaller living room windows and any window where curtains would crowd the wall.
Curtains win where the window is wide, where you want the room to feel taller, and where you need two layers of sheer and blackout. For full-height glazing in a living room, curtains on a ceiling track are still the better answer, and the options are set out on our curtains and blinds page.
A combination is common and works well: Roman blinds on the smaller windows of a room, curtains on the main glazing, both in fabrics from the same family.
Which lining to choose
The lining matters more than the face fabric for how the blind performs.
Standard lining protects the fabric and softens the light. Fine for a kitchen or a hallway.
Dim-out lining cuts most of the light without full darkness, and keeps a little of the fabric's texture visible when the sun is behind it. A good compromise in a living room.
Blackout lining is what a bedroom in Dubai needs. One point that is easy to get wrong: a blackout Roman blind fitted inside the window recess will still leak a bright line down each side. If the room needs to be genuinely dark, fit the blind outside the recess, wider than the opening, so the fabric overlaps the wall. We set this out at the measuring stage because it cannot be fixed afterwards.
Thermal interlining adds a layer between face and lining. It makes a noticeable difference on a west-facing window in summer, and it also makes the folds hang heavier and more evenly.
Sizes that work
A single Roman blind works well up to roughly two metres wide. Beyond that the rod across the back has to be heavier, the blind gets harder to raise by hand, and the folds can sag in the middle.
For a wider window, two or three blinds on one headrail look deliberate and operate far better than one oversized blind. The join between them is barely visible when they are down and completely hidden when they are up.
Fold depth is the detail nobody asks about and everybody notices. We set it so the folds divide evenly into the drop, which means the stack sits level when the blind is raised instead of one fold being half the size of the others.
Kitchens, bathrooms and child safety
Roman blinds suit kitchens for a practical reason: they sit above the worktop and clear of the sink, where a curtain would hang into the splash zone. Choose a wipeable or moisture-tolerant fabric and avoid a loose linen.
In bathrooms they work in the same way, provided the window is not directly over a shower.
On safety, every chain-operated blind we fit comes with a safety tensioner fixed to the wall as standard. For children's rooms we usually recommend going further and choosing a cordless or motorised control, which removes the chain entirely. Motorised blinds take remote or app control and can be joined to a smart home system; we confirm where the power point needs to be during the site visit so nothing is left trailing.
Looking after them
Vacuum the folds with a brush attachment every few weeks; dust settles on the top of each fold and that is what makes a blind look tired. Spot-clean marks rather than washing the whole blind, because the panel is stitched to size and will shrink out of true. For a thorough clean, the blind comes off the headrail in a minute and can be taken to a specialist.
If you are deciding between a Roman blind and curtains for a particular window, send a photo of the window with its measurements. A site measurement anywhere in Dubai is included with the quotation, and we will tell you which of the two will actually suit the room. The full specification is on our Roman blinds page.
A Roman blind gives you the fabric and folds of a curtain in about a quarter of the stacking space.
